Whether the bar bolts to the TV or the wall depends on how your TV mount moves. Answer four questions and get the bracket, the clearance and the cable.
The right soundbar bracket is decided by your TV mount, not by your soundbar. If the TV is fixed or tilting, fix the bar to the wall about two to three inches below the screen. If the TV is on a full-motion arm or a pull-down fireplace mount, the bar must bolt to the TV's own VESA holes so it travels with the screen. Leave enough gap that the bar does not cover the TV's infrared receiver, and connect over HDMI eARC rather than optical if both devices support it.
This decides more than it sounds like. A bar fixed to the wall stays put while a full-motion TV swings away from it.
Bracket type by TV mount
This is the whole decision in one table. Everything else — weight rating, depth, finish — is a detail once you have this right.

The infrared receiver problem
This is the call-back we get most often after a soundbar goes in: the remote has stopped working. Almost every TV puts its infrared receiver in the bottom bezel, usually centred or slightly off to one side, and a soundbar mounted tight underneath sits directly in front of it. The TV is fine. The remote is fine. The line of sight is blocked.
Two inches of clearance normally solves it. If it does not — some bars are tall enough to block it from further away — an inexpensive infrared extender relocates the receiver to somewhere visible. Worth knowing before you conclude the TV has developed a fault.
HDMI eARC, and the port that matters
If both your TV and your soundbar support it, HDMI eARC is straightforwardly better than optical: one cable, uncompressed audio including Dolby Atmos, and the TV remote controls the bar's volume so you stop juggling two remotes.
The catch is that eARC lives on exactly one HDMI port, labelled ARC or eARC on the back of the TV. Plugging into any other port gives you picture but no audio return, and the symptom looks like a broken soundbar rather than a wrong port. When a TV is already on the wall this is a genuinely annoying thing to discover, so check the labelling before you hang it.
Optical is not obsolete. It carries compressed 5.1 reliably and it is completely immune to the HDMI handshake problems that occasionally plague eARC setups. It simply cannot carry Atmos. For an older TV or an entry-level bar it remains the right cable.
Frequently asked questions
Should I mount my soundbar to the wall or to the TV?
It depends entirely on whether the TV moves. On a fixed or tilting mount, fixing the bar to the wall is simpler and steadier. On a full-motion arm or a pull-down fireplace mount, the bar must bolt to the TV's own VESA holes using a bracket with extension plates — otherwise the screen swings out and the sound stays behind on the wall, which sounds exactly as odd as it reads.
How far below the TV should a soundbar be mounted?
About two inches on a fixed mount, and about three on a tilting one. The gap matters for two reasons. Too close and the bar physically fouls the screen when a tilting mount rotates. Too close also risks the bar covering the TV's infrared receiver, which sits in the bottom bezel on most sets and is what your remote talks to. If the remote stops working after you fit the bar, that is almost always what happened.
Can you mount a soundbar above the TV?
You can, and sometimes you have to — a low console or a fireplace can leave no room underneath. It works acceptably, but dialogue coming from above the picture reads as slightly detached, because your brain expects voices to come from the mouths on screen. If you mount above, angle the bar downward if the bracket allows it. Below is always the better option when it is available.
Do I need a special bracket for a Sonos Arc?
Not strictly, but a model-specific bracket is worth the small premium on popular bars. The Arc and Arc Ultra have their own mounting geometry, and a bracket made for them locates positively rather than clamping, which means no shimming, no straps, and no chance of the bar shifting over time. Universal brackets work; dedicated ones are simply tidier.
Should I connect a soundbar with HDMI or optical?
HDMI eARC if both the TV and the bar support it. It is one cable, it carries uncompressed audio including Dolby Atmos, and it lets the TV remote control the bar's volume. Optical is the fallback for older gear: it works and it is reliable, but it cannot carry Atmos or uncompressed surround because of bandwidth limits. One catch that trips people up — eARC only works on one specific HDMI port on the TV, labelled ARC or eARC. Any other port will not do it.
How much weight can a soundbar bracket hold?
Most universal brackets are rated between 10 and 15 pounds, which covers the large majority of soundbars. A big Dolby Atmos bar with upward-firing drivers can exceed that, and some heavy-duty brackets go to 30 pounds. Check your bar's weight in its manual before buying — it is the one spec that actually disqualifies a bracket, and it is the one nobody looks up.
