DFW walls: brick veneer, fireplaces and clay-soil slabs
Nearly every DFW house is brick veneer over wood studs with drywall inside, built on a slab over expansive clay. The clay moves with the seasons, so settlement cracks over doorways are common, and no anchor goes into a cracked or patched section. Fireplaces are where masonry comes in.

- Usually it is the clay, not the wall. Expansive soil lifts and settles DFW slabs with the seasons, and the crack opens and closes with it. The installer looks at it first and keeps the anchors out of any cracked or patched section.
- Can a big TV go high on a two-story family-room wall?
- It can, within limits. We center the screen near seated eye level, and if it has to sit higher, the upward viewing angle from the seat should stay at or under about 15 degrees. Past that, a lower spot or a pull-down mount works better.
