Field notes from Smyrna installs
Smyrna grew out of a religious camp ground that was known across Georgia by the late 1830s, and the Western and Atlantic Railroad reached it in 1842. The town incorporated in 1872 with fewer than 300 people, after cycling through names including Varner’s Station, Ruff’s Siding and Ruff’s Station. Very little of that survives as housing stock. What does survive is a small pre-1955 core near downtown with plaster-and-lath walls, and we probe those with a pilot bit rather than trusting an electronic finder that reads lath as solid wood.
The Smyrna we mostly work is postwar. Aviation jobs after the Second World War pulled people into Cobb County, Belmont Hills built out around its 1954 shopping center, and by the 1960s the city was mid-century ranches on wood studs behind brick veneer, with a common brick fireplace on the long wall. That is still the most common Smyrna install, and it is the reason the masonry surcharge comes up here more often than in the newer Cobb suburbs.
Then the city rebuilt its own downtown, from the Village Green in 1988 through Market Village in 2002, and the townhomes and condos that followed brought light-gauge steel framing with them. Our truck carries 4-inch lag bolts, 3-inch Grade 5 lags and SnapToggle anchors on every Smyrna run.
