The tobacco-town blocks off Main Street are the oldest thing we mount on in Wendell, and the walls are plaster-and-lath over balloon framing. Two consequences. First, sand plaster from that period is harder than modern gypsum and it chips rather than crumbles, so drilling happens at low speed with a sharp masonry bit and no hammer action.
