Field notes from Woodstock installs
Woodstock is a young city on old bones. It was incorporated as a town in 1897 around a Louisville and Nashville Railroad stop, the depot on Main Street went up in 1912 hauling cotton and rope, and passenger service ended in 1949 when the place still had barely 500 people. Then the I-575 corridor happened. Woodstock counted 2,699 residents in 1980, 10,050 in 2000, and 35,065 in 2020, and in 2007 it was ranked the tenth fastest-growing suburb in the country.
That history means our crew almost never meets an old wall here. Fewer than fifty houses in the whole east-side ZIP were built before 1940. What we get instead is two clearly different waves. The Towne Lake side is a 1990s city, with nearly half its housing from that single decade, plus a solid 1980s layer underneath in Eagle Watch and Towne Lake Hills. The east side around Main Street, Arnold Mill Road and Trickum Road is a 2000s and 2010s city, with about half its stock from those two decades.
Both waves are wood-stud framing behind drywall, brick or vinyl siding outside, and in most of them a masonry fireplace on the main living wall. Anchors go into framing. The stone is the only thing that needs the hammer drill.
