A metal-stud TV mount isn’t a separate kind of bracket. It’s an ordinary bracket that lines up with steel framing, plus anchors made to grip thin steel. Get both right and a steel-stud wall in a condo or apartment tower holds a TV as well as wood does. Get either wrong and the lag bolts strip out of the steel, or the toggles end up in drywall between the studs.

What makes a TV mount work on metal studs?
The anchor does the holding and the bracket decides where the anchors can go. Steel studs are thin channel, roughly 25 to 20 gauge, so lag bolts have almost nothing to thread into. Toggles pass through a hole in the stud’s face and clamp behind it. That changes what you look for in the bracket:
- A wall plate that reaches two studs at your spacing. Steel studs sit 16 or 24 inches apart. A plate that only catches one stud leaves half the load on drywall.
- Slots where the studs are. You want at least four slots, better six, that land over steel, because the toggle count is what sets the weight limit.
- Fixed or tilting over full-motion. An arm levers on the top anchors when it’s pulled out. It works on steel studs with every slot filled, but a fixed or tilting plate asks less of thin steel.
- A rating 25% over your TV’s weight, the same margin our VESA guide uses for any wall.
The weight limit comes from the anchors, not the bracket: in our metal-stud guide’s planning rule, four 1/4-inch toggles through the steel carry a TV up to about 100 lb and six carry up to about 150 lb. A toggle that misses the stud is only a drywall anchor, and drywall alone is safe only for a TV up to about 32 inches and 30 pounds.

A note on the numbers: the 200 lb in the CondoMounts listing is the seller’s figure for the kit on steel studs. We plan by the more conservative toggle counts above, about 100 lb on four through the steel and 150 lb on six, so a heavy TV gets six anchors whatever the box says.

It comes down to weight. Samsung’s 2025 QN90F spec sheet happens to cover almost every common size, so here it is against the planning rule:

Tools that make a steel-stud install easier
- A finder that reads steel. The Zircon StudSensor Basic is sold for wood and metal studs. A CH Hanson magnetic stud finder finds the screws that hold the drywall to each stud, which on steel framing run in a line down the stud face.
- The right bit. A 1/4-20 SnapToggle goes through a 1/2-inch hole, and the bit has to punch through the steel web, not stop at it. Use a sharp bit; the CondoMounts kit includes its own pilot bit.
- A level on the bracket. Mark all the holes with the plate held level, drill, then check again before the TV goes on.
Can you put a full-motion mount on metal studs?
Yes, with conditions. Use every slot the wall plate has over steel, pick an arm rated well past your TV’s weight, and fold it back to the wall when you’re not using the reach. The force on the top toggles is highest when the arm is fully extended, which is why our fastener guide uses a safety factor of 2 to 3 for arms against 1.5 for fixed and tilting mounts. For a big TV on a long arm, a plywood backer toggled across three studs spreads the load further.
Mistakes that cost people the wall
- Lag bolts into steel. The threads strip on the first real load. Steel takes toggles.
- Toggles between studs. Off the steel, a toggle is a drywall anchor, fine for a TV up to about 32 inches and 30 pounds and nothing more.
- A plate that reaches one stud. Half the anchors end up in drywall. Choose a plate that lists your spacing, or add an extension plate.
- Cranking the bolts. Stop when the plate is firm. Over-tightening deforms the toggle channel in thin steel and loosens the grip you were trying to add.
