The family room is where the hardware question gets interesting, because its TV wall often backs onto the garage. That wall can be block, part of the masonry shell, or wood frame with fire-rated drywall, and the floor plan does not say which. A 3/16-inch test hole does: block comes out as gray grit, wood as pale shavings. Block gets 1/4-inch Tapcons and the +$99 masonry surcharge. A framed garage wall gets 5/16-inch lag bolts into the studs at the standard rate, and when the garage side is open framing, in-wall concealment is an easy fish at $99 per TV. Upstairs, bedrooms and lofts are wood stud on 16-inch centers, two lags per stud, with bedroom screens at 42-50 inches to center. A full-motion arm on that garage wall gets four anchors, whatever the wall turns out to be. Builder drywall in these plans is smooth and freshly painted, so the bracket outline gets taped before drilling. Most College Chase installs run 50-75 minutes.
A condo or villa unit in Ruskin brings two questions a house does not: what the wall is made of, and when you are allowed to drill it. Walls between units can be block, while partitions inside a unit can be wood stud or light-gauge steel, and the paint looks the same on all three.
