Field notes from Chamblee installs
Chamblee incorporated in 1908 as a railroad town surrounded by dairy farms, and Camp Gordon put roughly 40,000 people here in 1917. Almost none of that housing survives. What we actually work in is what came after: mid-century ranches and bungalows built from the 1940s into the 1960s on quarter-acre lots, Huntley Hills and Sexton Woods among them, plus the split-levels that filled in through the 1970s. Those walls are wood studs 16 inches on center behind half-inch drywall, with plaster-and-lath in the oldest rooms around Pierce Drive and Clairmont Road. We probe there with a pilot bit rather than trusting a finder to read through lath.
The second Chamblee is downtown. The loft conversions and condo buildings along New Peachtree Road and Peachtree Boulevard went up between 2002 and 2006 on light-gauge steel framing, so lag bolts are out and SnapToggle anchors rated past 100 pounds become the standard. Some of those buildings put masonry behind the drywall, and our crew carries a hammer drill and Tapcon anchors for the day the bit stops biting.
The 1950s and 1960s brick fireplaces get mortar-joint anchors. We have mounted from the MARTA station condos to the North Atlanta High School area and out along the Buford Highway corridor, and the truck leaves loaded for all three wall types.
