Field notes from Montrose installs
Montrose is a Houston neighborhood rather than a city of its own, and its housing arrived in three waves that all show up in the walls. The 1910s-1930s core around Westmoreland, Avondale, Cherryhurst and Hyde Park is bungalows and the odd mansion on pier-and-beam, plaster over lath or horizontal shiplap behind later drywall. The 1960s-70s left two-story garden apartments on the side streets. Since the 2000s, three-story townhomes on slab-on-grade have taken the lots near the Westheimer strip and out toward the Menil.
Each wall gets its own method. Shiplap means a magnet sweep for nail lines instead of a stud finder. Plaster means tape, a stepped pilot and the hammer function off. Townhome drywall is lag-bolt work into 16-inch centers with a SnapToggle for the rare miss. On the Museum District edge the towers are concrete and metal stud, so the hardware changes to steel-rated toggles and Tapcons.
Humidity writes the wiring rules: sealed penetrations, CL3-rated cable, nothing left coiled in a 130°F attic. Gulf storm season does not move an interior install date. A named hurricane in the Gulf is the one thing that does.
TV mounting prices in Montrose
The number depends on the screen, not the wall: $129 up to 54”, $159 for 55-69”, $209 for 70-79”, $255 for 80” and up. Cable concealment $95/TV. Anchoring into brick, stone or concrete adds the published +$99 masonry surcharge. On plaster, drywall and metal stud, there is no surcharge. In Montrose a shiplap bungalow wall, a plaster wall and townhome drywall all sit at the base rate; only a brick fireplace surround under a bungalow mantel or a Museum District edge concrete wall triggers it.
